The XTOOL IP616 sits in the awkward middle ground between cheap code readers and professional scan tools, and this hands-on test on a BMW shows where it lands. At roughly 330 pounds it offers full system access rather than just engine codes, so the engine management unit, transmission, airbag, alarm and tyre pressure modules can all be interrogated for stored faults and, more usefully, live data.

The live data implementation is the strongest part of the package.
