SDG #126 Make an Emergency Stop with NVR System for your Work Bench
Every workbench accumulates mains-powered kit: soldering stations, bench supplies, hot air, motors, chargers. This build tackles the safety gap most hobby benches have, namely no single, obvious way to kill power fast, and no protection against equipment restarting by itself when a tripped breaker or a power cut is restored.
The solution here is a classic industrial no-volt release (NVR) arrangement rather than a simple switch. A 2-pole contactor is wired so its own auxiliary contact latches the coil after a momentary start press, with a latching mushroom-head stop button in series on the coil circuit. Press stop and the coil drops out; because the latch is broken, power stays off until someone deliberately presses start again. That behaviour is the whole point: a plain rocker switch would happily re-energise a bench full of tools the instant the supply came back.
Practical detail is where this kind of project earns its keep. Contactor coil voltage has to match what you are feeding it, live and neutral switching on both poles is preferable to switching live alone, and earth continuity through the enclosure needs to be solid. Stranded conductors going into screw terminals benefit from crimped bootlace ferrules, which stop strands splaying, reduce the chance of a loose joint working free under vibration, and give a much tidier, more reliable termination than tinned wire.
For anyone running a bench with dangerous or unattended equipment, this is a low cost, high value upgrade. It is worth doing properly with correctly rated components and an enclosure, since you are working with mains voltage throughout.
