SDG #015 Welcome and Update on CC LED Driver (New 3W LEDs)

This short channel update doubles as a checkpoint on the ongoing constant current LED driver project, which is the kind of build that teaches more about power electronics than almost any other beginner project. Driving high brightness LEDs from a voltage source is unreliable because forward voltage drifts with temperature and varies between parts, so a proper constant current topology is the only way to get predictable brightness and a sane thermal margin. That design goal frames everything discussed here.

The practical takeaway is around the load itself: a batch of 3W Bridgelux emitters bought through eBay. Star mounted 3W LEDs from marketplace sellers are extremely cheap, but the caveats matter. Bin and colour temperature claims are rarely verifiable, the aluminium star PCBs vary in thickness and thermal path quality, and the quoted 3W rating assumes real heatsinking rather than a bare star sitting on a bench. For driver development they are still a sensible choice, because they are cheap enough to sacrifice if a prototype misbehaves and they present a realistic forward voltage and current range for testing regulation and current limiting behaviour.

For anyone following along and planning their own version, the useful lessons are to design for the worst case forward voltage rather than the typical figure, to budget headroom for the current sense element, and to sort out heatsinking before pushing the LEDs anywhere near their rated current.
