SDG #057 Make a Manual Pick and Place Tool for SMD Assembly and Rework

Placing 0603 resistors and fine pitch ICs with tweezers works right up until a part flips, launches, or sticks to the tweezer tip. A vacuum pick-up pen solves that by holding the component flat and releasing it exactly where you want it, and this build shows that you do not need to spend much to get that convenience on the bench.

Two different approaches are trialled here. The first relies on a self contained hand operated suction source, where a squeeze bulb or syringe style plunger generates just enough negative pressure to hold a small chip package. The second routes vacuum from a continuous source through tubing to a pen body, with a bleed hole or valve under a fingertip so the part can be dropped instantly. The trade off is familiar to anyone who has used commercial pick-up tools: the manual version costs almost nothing and needs no compressor, but it can lose grip on larger or heavier parts and offers less precise release timing, while the plumbed version is far more controllable at the price of tethering you to a hose.

Tip choice matters more than the pump. A soft rubber or silicone cup seals against slightly uneven package tops, while a rigid metal needle tip suits very small passives but leaks if it is not sitting flat. Leak testing every joint in the tubing is the single biggest factor in whether the tool holds a component or drops it halfway to the board.
