SDG #082 Ikea Play Kitchen Hack with PCBs from JLCPCB

This build takes a stock Ikea Duktig-style play kitchen and turns it into an interactive toy using custom-designed printed circuit boards rather than hacked-together perfboard. The focus is on the practical realities of moving from an idea to a working, child-proof assembly: laying out the boards so the tactile push buttons line up with the panel cutouts, choosing LED brightness and diffusion that looks good behind plastic, and driving simple sound effects so the hob and oven controls actually respond when pressed.

The assembly side is where most of the useful detail sits. Boards are populated using solder paste and flux, with a preheat station bringing the substrate up to temperature before hot air is applied, which keeps the small passives from tombstoning and reduces the thermal shock on larger components. A stereo microscope is used for inspection, and the video shows why that magnification matters when you are checking fillets on fine-pitch parts and hunting for solder bridges that would be invisible to the naked eye. Board cleaning after reflow is covered too, using both alcohol-based and water-based PCB cleaners to lift flux residue that would otherwise attract dust and look scruffy inside a finished product.

For anyone considering a similar project, the takeaway is that low-cost prototype PCB runs have removed most of the reason to build one-off toy electronics on strip board. A properly dimensioned board makes mechanical fitting far easier, gives you clean mounting holes, and produces something durable enough to survive being poked repeatedly by a toddler. The techniques shown, from paste application through hot air reflow and inspection, transfer directly to any small SMD project.
