SDG #041 USB Interface Isolation - FY3224S Sig Gen

Cheap DDS function generators like the FeelTech FY3224S are useful bench tools, but their USB control interface creates a direct electrical path between the instrument’s ground and the host PC. That matters more than most people realise: once a mains-earthed oscilloscope, an earthed PC and a signal generator all share a ground reference, you get ground loops, injected noise on low level measurements, and a real risk of pushing fault current through a USB port if something goes wrong on the bench.

This build addresses the problem at the source by inserting galvanic isolation into the USB link using the NVE IL612-2 digital isolator. Unlike optocoupler based approaches, the IL612 family uses GMR (giant magnetoresistive) coupling, which gives usable data rates and tight propagation delay matching, both of which matter for full speed USB signalling. The important design details covered here are the ones people usually get wrong when attempting DIY USB isolation: keeping the two ground domains physically separated, providing an isolated supply rail for the instrument side rather than borrowing bus power across the barrier, and handling the D+ and D- pair correctly so enumeration still works reliably.

For anyone using an FY3200S or FY3224S alongside a scope for characterising filters, amplifiers or switching circuits, this is a worthwhile modification. It cleans up measurement noise, removes the shared earth path, and gives some insurance for the PC’s USB controller. It is also a good template for isolating other budget USB test instruments, which frequently ship with no isolation at all and no obvious warning about it.
