SDG #286 Metcal HCT-910 New 900W Hot Air SMD Rework Station
The Metcal HCT-910 is the long overdue successor to the HCT-900, swapping analogue knobs for a graphic LCD, rotary encoder and a fully digital control loop. On paper it is a 900W heater covering 50 to 600 degrees C with 5 to 120 litres per minute of airflow, packed into a notably small two kilogram cast aluminium case that takes up far less bench space than the Chinese stations recently covered on the channel.
The teardown backs up the price tag. Inside is a filtered IEC inlet with proper chassis earthing, a fused live pole feeding a double pole rocker, a Mean Well 24V supply for logic and blower, a compact anti-vibration mounted brushless blower, and a single PIC32 controlled front panel board handling zero crossing detection, triac drive and thermocouple amplification. Assembly quality is tidy, with the only real criticism being two identical connectors that invite assembly line mix ups.
In use, the displayed temperature is the genuine live reading rather than a faked set point, which makes the station honest about overshoot and recovery. Probing a thermocouple into the 5mm nozzle showed roughly 10 to 15 degrees of error across several set points and flow rates, which is a good result given the sensor sits deep in the heater. The blower is quiet and smooth, and the accelerometer based standby plus 1.2 metre flexible tubing are welcome touches.
The complaints are mostly fixable in firmware or accessories: presets are only accessible when the unit is PIN locked, cool down uses a fixed timer rather than a target temperature, nozzles are expensive and only one is supplied, and there is no desktop cradle, so the handpiece exhaust blows hot air across your bench. Verdict: the best hot air station reviewed on the channel so far, with caveats.
