Infrared preheaters sit in an awkward spot on the hobbyist bench: they are not strictly essential, but once you start reflowing BGAs, QFNs or large ground-plane-heavy boards, trying to do the job with hot air alone becomes an exercise in warped substrates and lifted pads. The Yihua 853A is one of the cheapest ways into that category, and this review looks at what that low price actually buys you.
The unit is assessed as a working tool rather than a spec sheet. Points covered include the ceramic infrared element and how evenly it spreads heat across the board area, the useful working footprint compared with the physical size of the enclosure, the temperature controller and how closely the displayed setpoint tracks reality, and the general standard of construction, wiring and mains safety that is typical of budget Chinese rework gear.

A preheater like the 853A brings the whole PCB up to a few hundred degrees below reflow so that a hot air pencil or soldering iron only has to supply the final delta. That reduces dwell time on individual joints, cuts thermal shock to nearby plastics and electrolytics, and makes desoldering large multi-layer boards far more predictable. It also helps enormously when hand-assembling boards with solder paste, which is the intended use here for upcoming project builds.
If you already own a decent hot air station and keep hitting the limits of its heat output on big copper-heavy boards, an entry-level IR bed is a sensible next purchase. Expect to verify the temperature readings independently and to give the mains side a once-over before trusting it.
