The FX-Audio DAC-X6 is one of those budget Chinese desktop DACs that promises a lot on the box: 24-bit conversion, coaxial, optical and USB inputs, a headphone amplifier and line out, all wrapped in a chunky aluminium case for well under the price of a name-brand unit. This review takes the unit apart, looks at the actual silicon inside rather than the marketing figures, and considers how the power supply, output stage and volume control affect what you hear at the headphone jack.

The more interesting question tackled here is the one printed on the front panel. Bit depth sets dynamic range, not detail, so moving from 16-bit to 24-bit buys headroom that is almost entirely swallowed by the noise floor of the analogue circuitry, the listening room and, in most cases, the recording itself. That means a DAC advertising 24-bit support is not automatically going to sound better than a competent 16-bit CD-era converter; what usually matters more is output noise, channel separation, jitter handling on the S/PDIF inputs and whether the headphone amp can drive your particular cans without clipping or running out of current.

For buyers, the practical takeaway is to treat the bit-depth number as a specification checkbox and judge the DAC-X6 on the things that actually vary between units at this price: input flexibility, absence of hiss and hum, usable volume range and build integrity. It is a solid value proposition as an input switcher and headphone amp for a desktop setup, but the 24-bit badge is not the reason to buy it.
