SDG #292 Topdon TC001 USB-C Thermal Camera

The Topdon TC001 is a plug-in thermal imager rather than a standalone camera, connecting over USB-C to an Android phone or a Windows PC. That design choice matters more than it first appears: because the sensor head is separate from the display, and an extension lead is supplied, it can be pushed into engine bays, behind electrical panels and other tight spaces where a pistol-grip thermal camera simply will not fit. There is also nothing to charge, which removes one of the more irritating aspects of owning a dedicated imager.

The headline figures are a 256 x 192 microbolometer and a 25 Hz refresh rate, with a standard measurement range of -20 to 150 C and a separate high range extending to 550 C, plus an automatic mode that switches between the two. The app itself is deliberately simple: centre crosshair, hot and cold spot markers, line and region of interest measurement, still capture, contrast and rotation controls, palette selection and a picture-in-picture overlay using the phone camera. That overlay is purely contextual; there is no true image fusion or alignment, so anyone expecting blended visual and thermal output should note the limitation.

The most useful test for electronics work is the focus check. On a populated clock PCB the fixed lens holds focus down to roughly 100 mm, comfortably resolving a DPAK regulator and individual SOT-23 transistors heating and cooling as LED segments switch. Closer than that and detail smears. At longer range, around 1.5 m, the refresh rate is clearly good enough to track movement smoothly.

Against competing pocket imagers with 80 x 60 or 160 x 120 sensors, the TC001’s resolution and frame rate look strong for the money, provided you can live without genuine dual camera fusion.
