SDG #105 UV Curable Solder Mask and UV Torches

UV curable solder mask has quietly become a standard item on the phone and board repair bench, and this look at the Mechanic liquid mask explains why it is worth having even for hobby work. The green paste is applied over exposed copper, repaired traces or scratched laminate, then flashed with ultraviolet light to set hard, giving back the insulation and mechanical protection that was lost when the original mask was scraped away. It is also handy for locking down jumper wires so they do not flex and lift pads later.

The practical catch is that the curing light matters more than most listings admit. Cheap UV LEDs in the 395nm to 405nm range will eventually set the mask, but the results here favour proper 365nm sources. Two torches are compared: the Convoy S2, a compact and inexpensive 18650 host that is a sensible first buy, and the Lightfe UV301, a higher output option with better filtering that cures faster and over a wider area. Filtered optics matter because unfiltered emitters throw a lot of visible violet light that does nothing useful for the resin and makes it harder to judge when the surface has actually gone matte and hard.

Also worth noting is the crossover use case: the same 365nm output is useful for inspecting boards for liquid damage, corrosion residue and previous repair attempts, since many contaminants fluoresce clearly under UV. Anyone buying a torch purely for solder mask should factor in eye safety, because 365nm output at these power levels is not something to look into or shine casually around a workspace.
