SDG #282 Fixing the JBC Solder Feeder

The JBC solder feeder was a disappointment first time round: it handled 1mm wire acceptably but repeatedly buckled and jammed anything finer, including 0.7mm and 0.5mm. This follow-up puts JBC’s official remedy to the test and then goes a step further with a home-designed replacement part.

The root cause is straightforward once the mechanism is exposed. Past the drive rollers the wire is being pushed rather than pulled, and every unsupported gap in the path becomes a place where thin wire can concertina. JBC’s answer was a lower-tension spring for the encoder/pinch roller assembly, which noticeably reduces the clamping force. That alone improved things, but the short ferrule between the drive rollers and the encoder roller remained a weak point, because wire leaving the drive rollers carries a natural curve and misses the entrance.

The fix here is a longer ferrule with a tapered lead-in and a 0.55mm through hole, positioned to capture the wire the instant it leaves the rollers so it has nowhere to deflect. Two were CNC machined, one in aluminium and one in PTFE, with the PTFE version preferred for its lower friction. With both the new spring and the custom ferrule fitted, 0.5mm lead-free wire fed through first time and repeatedly.

For buyers, the takeaway is mixed. The feeder can be made to work, but a premium production tool arriving with a known defect uncorrected months after the fix was documented is hard to excuse. The stock button is also awkward in practice; a foot pedal is effectively mandatory. This remains a production or soldering robot accessory rather than a hobbyist purchase.
