SDG #218 Metcal PS-900 450 kHz Smartheat Soldering System

Metcal’s PS-900 is the entry point into the company’s SmartHeat platform, and it works nothing like the closed-loop stations most people are used to. Instead of a thermocouple, a controller and a PID loop, the PS-PW900 power supply pushes a fixed 450 kHz RF signal down a coaxial cable into the PS-HC3 handpiece, where the cartridge’s own ferromagnetic alloy layer sets the temperature. Once the alloy reaches its Curie point its magnetic permeability collapses, the skin effect that was concentrating current in the heater layer disappears, and power draw drops automatically. That means no temperature knob, no calibration and no drift: temperature is a property of the tip you install, not a setting.

The review covers what that architecture actually gets you in practice. The power supply is opened up to show the RF drive circuitry and construction quality, and the behaviour of the self-regulating loop is examined to explain why the iron loads up so aggressively on large joints while still idling safely between them. Soldering tests move from ordinary through-hole work to heavier thermal loads, finishing with the coin test that has become the standard informal benchmark for thermal recovery on this channel, giving a direct point of comparison against JBC and clone T12 style stations.

The trade-offs are worth understanding before buying. Cartridge choice becomes a purchasing decision rather than a menu option, tips are expensive, and there is no display or profile system. In exchange you get near instant readiness, tight tip-to-work temperature stability and a design with very little to go wrong. Buyers doing repetitive production or rework at a fixed temperature will get the most from it; anyone who frequently changes temperatures may find a conventional station more flexible for the money.
